Shade's story
Shade was alone in the eerily dark police department, typing away at one of the company computers; The monitor seemed like the only light source in the immediate area, and Shade looked tired, spending hours looking for someone he hasn't seen in years and felt like his existence slowly burnt out. "I didn't think it was going to be this hard looking for dad's current residence..." Shade said to himself in near frustration. His father's name, which he was looking for, was the very same name that Shade himself used to be known as when he was little. "Vincent Potter, there he is!" Shade finally found the name after looking through databases in every region, but forgot the very place he was originally from: Kanto.
"092, Elm St., Lavender Town.... I see he moved, but not far." Shade observed before copying the address down on his notepad. Shade couldn't help but start having flashbacks of when he was living in Lavender Town, back when he had a whole family. Glade was only seven and Shade was eighteen at the time; where they lived wasn't exactly farmland, but it was still a small town, though there were times he would sneak out to Vermillion City and do all sorts of antics not much unlike his brother. As much as he liked pulling harmless pranks like his friends, he placed all of his efforts on breakdancing.
He and his friends would meet twice a week at various locations to avoid being detected by the police; they rotated between the square field in Vermillion City, near the fountain at Celadon City, and behind Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. They would breakdance from 10 PM til 1 AM, and everyone had their own style of dancing techniques; Shade preferred breakdancing to Freestyle music, most forms of Electronic usic (including Oldstyle Gabber even), and also 80's and 90's hip-hop.
The Midnight Dance Crew, or MDC as they call themselves, wore black and the color of the most dominant Pokemon type of their area for distinction; in Shade's case, it was, unsurprisingly, black and purple. As The Crew expanded, they started meeting earlier, and started dancing in public, where everyone, especially Shade, grew a huge crowd.
Perhaps one of the most influential moments in his life was when they entered in nationwide dance contest, and were one of the top three teams in the region. Not long after winning the Semi-Finals to be in the 1st Place Match, a well known dance who was about twenty years older and went by the name "Swift Sharpedo"; he was well known in Kanto for his ridiculous outfit which consisted of a pink and white Sloking jersey, jeans with Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee badges all over his pants, and a hat that looked suspiciously like a cross between a black Chinese straw hat and a lampshade. Despite the costume, he became a living legend for doing the helicopter for over a whole minute, with everyone wondering how he was able to do this without bending his hat. "I think you're gonna be in music videos if you keep up that style of dancing, Shade." he told the prodigy. "Swift?! Why are you here?!" Shade asked in near excitement.
"I just figured I should give you a little present; you're the first person I'm telling you this, but I'm planning on retiring soon."
"Why?"
"The only way to explain this is that I have something the doctors can't fix, and I don't have much time left."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear about that..." Shade replied, with a sad look in his eyes. "But you know, I firmly believe you are going to do great things in the future; even greater than nything I have ever done."
"You think so?"
"Of course; I've bene watching you since you and you little club started dancing across the street from my house near the fountain in Celadon." he replied before taking off his hat, and placed it on Shade's head. "With that said, I figured I should give you a good luck charm."
"You hat?! But you're well known for it!"
" Yeah, but I think a new generation should be in the limelight now; it's not my choice to decide how long I can dance with singers and such, it's my body's. You know the saying, out with the old, in with the new."
"Thank you." Shade replied before he turned around, but before he could take a step, Swift grabbed his shoulders and told him, "There's a secret about the hat that you might find useful."
"Yeah?"
"Underneath the cotton, silk and leather on the hat which is obviously for comfort, The hat is entirely made of steel, and while it's hard to tell, the top of the hat is the only visible part of the steel, which painstakingly painted a piano black so it didn't clash; that's how I broke that record; you wouldn't last more than 10 seconds otherwise."
"Cooool!" Shade replied in amazement as he felt his hat. for the steel; he couldn't feel it at first until he felt along the edges more firmly.
"I wish you good luck, Shade," Swift told him as he pulled out a pen and paper and wrote his phone number and address. "and here's my contact info if you want to talk."
"Thanks, Swift; I won't let you down." Shade replied as he walked back to his crew and went up on stage. Their opponents were clad in blue and white clothing, each of them having different dance styles; Shade was going up against a similar dancer who looked skinnier than Shade, but was taller in comparison. When the match started, one by one, they faced off their opponents fiercely, but they were both neck and neck; the deciding factor of the match was going to be between Shade and the skinny person in front of him. After minutes of shuffling their legs and spinning on the floors, Shade decided to do a dance move that very few have tried, but even fewer succeeded called the Helicopter Flip; it was a move that started with spinning on his head, but then with enough speed and momentum, he would be able to do a somersault on his feet then back on his head again for a nother brief spin before landing on his feet again; a move that is impossible for most, but it can be done.
Shade his head on the floor with his new hat and started spinning; Swift was right about the hat in that he was able maintain his momentum with the steel support in his hat; he felt like a spinning top endlessly riding the momentum; hoever, he wasn't able to see he was spinning towards the edge of the stage, aso when he was about to do the flip, he fell off the stage, and suddenly blacked out; the next thing he saw, he woke up in theh ospital with friends and family on his side, relieved he wasn't killed from the fall.
