(This is a one-shot I wrote last night and tbh I don't know why I did it because I cried like three times. Basically fuck Jade Winters and fuck Felix Scotts and I hate myself for crying over my OWN CHARACTERS WHAT THE FUCK)
(Okay and actually I thought about this from a prompt I found on Tumblr and I was listening to a song called Truce by twenty one pilots on repeat for the entire time I wrote this. It's named Truce and it weaves in several lines from it. I'm still crying)
Tears ran down Felix’s face, and he couldn’t help but sniffle as he felt his lover’s crimson wet his shaking hands. Felix wept as if his tears would heal Jade’s wounds, but they wouldn’t. The chaos of battle, the hail of bullets, it had all been too much, even for him. Jade Winters, the confident, proficient fighter he was, brought down by a stray bullet. Of course, their enemies saw the opportunity and shot for it in the most literal sense.
The battle was still raging, too. In the distance, the pair heard the gunfire and grunts of both their comrades and their combatants. Or, at least Felix could. It seemed like every sense Jade had intently focused on Felix. His eyes focused on his soft, teary optics, dilated with shock. His hearing gravitated to his whimpers and pleas for life, his bargains with an unmerciful god. His scent only detected Felix’s, breathing in the way his lover smelled so he could keep it with him in death. His taste savored the memories of every time their lips touched, and they came back with nostalgia as he smiled with fear of the unknown. His touch, running his hands on Felix’s cheeks, once again focusing on the grief in his partner’s face.
“It’s fine to be sad, Felix.” Jade smiled. “But please promise me one thing.” he asked.
“What?” Felix muttered quietly, through his sobs. “Anything. Just, just don’t let death cut you off.” he pleaded.
“Don’t eat my snacks in the pantry.” Jade winked and grinned, weakly. Felix smiled a bit, tears still running down his cheeks. He nodded his head, with a serene look despite the chaos that was in his mind. “I won’t, I’ll make sure they’re here when you get back.”
“Thanks.” Jade breathed. “Can I be honest, Felix?” he said, without much concern for his answer. He was on a time limit. “I’m scared. I’ve never been this scared. I don’t know where I’m going, for once in my life.” He said, clearly choking back a sob. “I hope I’m not my only friend. I just hope I’m not alone.”
“You won’t be, Jade. You won’t.” Felix assured him. Felix honestly had no clue, but there was no way he could tell Jade that. He’d let this be his only lie to his lover. “You’ll always be annoying someone.” He joked, lightly.
“I’m not concerned about that.” Jade nodded. “They’ll probably send me to Heaven because Satan got tired of my ass.” He smirked.
“I’ll find you eventually, I will.” Felix sobbed, but kept a smile. “I won’t let you be alone forever. We’ll be alone together, okay? Just like we always have been.”
“I’m sorry.” Jade choked out. “I’m sorry I didn’t leave with you, Felix. I’m sorry I let Mercury keep me in his army.” He began to whimper. “I’m sorry I ever shot at you.”
Felix nodded. “It’s okay, Jade. It’s-“
“I’m not finished.” Jade said, as urgent as he could. “I’m sorry I ever shot at you. I’m sorry I ever doubted that I could love you. I’m sorry for that small part of time where I wasn’t yours.” He sobbed, and not from the holes in his body. “I’m sorry I didn’t try a truce. I’m sorry that I denied your best efforts to snap me out. I’m sorry.” He paused.
“But now the night is coming to a close.” He breathed out, the pain coming back to him. “Felix, if you go back out there, please. Stay alive for me.”
Felix nodded, with tears rolling down his face, his hands still shaking. “I will, I promise."
Jade nodded. And let a tear run down his face. “I think this is it, Felix.”
A twist of agony and pain came across Felix’s face, but he tried to keep himself calm. At least until after it happened. He owed Jade that. “Okay.” He nodded, the tears slightly blurring his vision. “I love you, Jade Winters. And I always will.”
Jade nodded, and mustered the last of his strength to drape his arm around Felix’s neck, and plant the last kiss on his lips. He fell back, his discolored irises shimmering with tears. “I love you, Felix Scotts. And never, ever fucking forget it.” Jade said as his eyelids fell.
Felix shut his eyes as he put his head to Jade’s chest. He felt it rise, with his heartbeat slow. It stuck up there for a moment, like Jade was fighting one last time for his life.
But everyone gets tired eventually.
Jade’s chest fell, and Felix heard his heart pump one, two, three more times. And then, he just sat in silence.
Jade was gone.
